East London-based JJ Draper has emerged today with debut single ‘Zero-Sum’. The track and its gorgeous new visual is our Neu Pick for today.

Channeling electronic producers from James Blake to SOHN, ‘Zero-Sum’ largely fits into the same box, but comes with a much warmer texture, feeling as akin to homely folk as it does icy electronica.

Talking about the single, Draper says: “’Zero-Sum’is a really special track for me…It’s a song about emotional dislocation, regret and apology. I think the track reflects my inability at the time to comprehend theconfusing emotions of a relationship ending. It’s taken me a long time to piece together and adopt the lessons that needed learning, to process the guilt and fractured memories in the songs into something coherent.”

The video for the track, directed by Joshua Bareham and created with artist Holly Horne, is a suitably intense affair, with rushing water perfectly complementing his blissful, calming debut effort.

“After seeing Holly’s work I was really keen for her to be involved in the video –
her work often has a quiet, cold intensity to it and I think this was vital in bringing to life the vision for a dislocated, dream - like setting for the track,” the singer says.
