Joshua Burnside has announced his biggest Dublin headline show to date, playing Vicar Street on Sunday May 16th 2027.

The Singular Artists-promoted show is part of the It’s Not Going To Be Okay tour, named after It’s Not Going To Be Okay, the fourth album he released on Nettwerk earlier this year.

It’s a significant step up for an artist who has been building steadily for a decade. Burnside’s last Dublin headliner was Whelan’s, and he has since gone from the Northern Ireland Music Prize winner of 2017 to one of the most magnetising songwriters working on this island.

Raised between the drumlins around Strangford Lough and the entries of east Belfast, Burnside works in a strain of experimental folk that pulls Irish traditional song into contact with electronics, field recordings and unorthodox production. The results have always sat slightly askew of the singer-songwriter template.

It’s Not Going To Be Okay was written in the aftermath of the death of his close friend Dean Jendoubi, and it is an unsparing record about grief and the slow, non-linear work of getting through it, built from stripped-back fingerpicking and blunt, unguarded writing. It picked up BBC 6Music playlisting on release.

It followed Teeth of Time, a Nialler9-recommended album that made the BBC 6Music albums of the year list and was nominated for the inaugural RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Album Of The Year, the Choice Music Prize Irish Album of the Year and the NI Music Prize for Best Album.

He also opened Other Voices’ Anam Sessions this year with a solo performance filmed at Barryscourt Castle.
